Internship Opportunities
The intern program at Ted Kurland Associates is open to all students who are currently enrolled in a degree course of study. TKA has long-standing relationships with the intern programs of Berklee College, Northeastern University, Boston University, New England Conservatory, Emerson College and Endicott College. Students from disciplines outside of music and music business, and from other schools, have also opted to intern at the agency. Internships are available throughout the year and, as they are non-paying, we are very flexible with scheduling hours.
Ted Kurland Associates began as a booking agency in the Seventies with Gary Burton as one of their first clients. It has since become the premier boutique booking agency for jazz music. Miles Davis, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Modern Jazz Quartet have all been clients of the Agency. The present roster includes both Chick and John, John Pizzarelli, Jon Anderson of Yes, Poncho Sanchez, Gary Burton, Pat Metheny, Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes, Wynton, Jason and Ellis Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ramsey Lewis and many others. TKA does have a few blues, folk, and world music artists in their present roster, including Pete Seeger, Glen David Andrews, the Soul Rebels Brass Band and The Robert Johnson Centennial Concerts project, but the primary client base are its roster of jazz artists.
TKA arranges bookings for these artists on a national and international basis. Interns will work on projects that include overviews of the booking process — from planning tours and soliciting dates to the negotiating and contracting process. TKA also has a Management Division which counts Pat Metheny and Roy Haynes among their clients. Management does utilizes TKA interns on a case-by-case basis — assisting in the areas of artist managment, tour management, and music publishing and royalty accounting.
As noted above, all internships are non-paying positions. There are instances where free-lance data entry projects become available and paid on a per-project basis. One perq of the internship are free tickets to local concerts by TKA artists. (Ticket availability, though, is contingent on promoter and artist approval.)
While there are the usual duties of filing and word-processing, we try to create an experience which will help interns to better understand the business of booking and management of artists. If there are specific components of the business they would like to explore with more detail, interns are able to formulate more specific projects with the Internship Coordinator. We also try to run a Resume/Cover Letter workshop every semester with Laurel Wicks, our VP Domestic Division.
