Carla Bley & Her Remarkable Big Band - Appearing Nightly
Here are two things that can be counted on when cracking open a new Carla Bley Big Band record: 1. many, many interesting and twisty passages of musical architecture and 2. volume. Oh yes, the horn section is enormous and it's powerful. I've made jokes about Bley's hair being shaped by the sheer force of that moving air. Don't mistake this as a cheap joke at Bley's expense. Go ahead and check out records like The Very Big Carla Bley Band — and remember to brace yourself lest "United States" knock you right back on your jazz-lovin' butt.
An Edifying Evening with Bill Charlap
Bill Charlap waited until almost the last possible moment in “The Gerry Mulligan Songbook,” a tribute at the 92nd Street Y on Monday night, before divulging a sentimental piece of trivia. It was in that room, he said, where he played his first concert with Mulligan’s quartet, in 1988. The evidence suggests that it was a fine debut: a review in The New York Times singled out Mr. Charlap as “a particularly enlivening element in the group,” adding that “broad gestures, even incipient levitation, helped him milk emotions from the piano.”
Pink Martini's Symphonic Swing
SUBHADRA DEVAN talks to lead singer China Forbes of Pink Martini about the indie group’s latest album and upcoming show.
It's been 16 years since Pink Martini started its brand of music, through its own label and live performances. Their popularity has grown mainly through word-of-mouth but news of the band’s musical creativity has snagged the interest of local artist Sean Ghazi. He recorded Pink Martini’s Let’s Never Stop Falling In Love for his debut album, Semalam, which went gold. “We got a call that he wanted to record that song,” says lead singer China Forbes in a recent interview.
Terence Blanchard's Wonderful Performance
Blanchard played a well-constructed set that balanced thickly structured harmonics with enthralling instrumental solos. Concert Review by Jordan Lawrence for THE DAILY TAR HEEL.
